A dedication to those men who shaped the careers of our favorite stars.
There is a saying that behind every successful man, there is a hand of a woman. Similarly in Bollywood, we can say behind every successful actor, there is the hand of a brilliant director. And when we speak of making actors successful, we don’t mean launching them, but giving them that much required boost for making them lambi race ka ghoda!
Without a director’s help, no actor can even establish himself for more than a couple of films, just ask any superstar! For example, Amitabh Bachchan owes his megastardom to Prakash Mehra and Manmohan Desai. Salman Khan is the darling of many due to the machinations of Sooraj Barjatya! Aamir Khan will be much grateful to his cousin, Mansoor Khan for giving two great hits early in his career, while Shah Rukh Khan has an Abbas Mastan and Aditya Chopra to lead him on his way to steal our hearts!
Let’s look at other stars who found their knight in shining armour in directors who didn’t gave them their debut!
Saviour: Ayan Mukherji
Sure, Ranbir Kapoor was the best thing in his debut film Saawariya. He also scored a much needed hit in Bachna Ae Haseeno. But it was Ayan Mukherji’s Wake Up Sid, that established him as an intelligent actor. It was also Ayan Mukherji who gave him his first 100-crore blockbuster inYeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. Now that Ranbir’s career is craving for a much needed reprieve, After the disastrous Besharam, Roy and Bombay Velvet, perhaps Ayan can play the superhero again for him, with his upcoming superhero film!
Saviour: Madhur Bhandarkar
Once upon a time, Priyanka Chopra was just one of the actresses in Bollywood. Sure, she had her hits in Aitraaz, Don, Mujhse Shaadi Karoge, but there weren’t enough for her to stand out from the rest of the crowd. Then she met Madhur Bhandarkar and signed a film, that changed her career for good. Fashion made people sit up and notice her as a serious actress. And that National award that came in her way was just the cherry on the icing. Too bad, their second collaboration,Madamji, fell apart!
Saviour: Sanjay Leela Bhansali
Ranveer Singh had a dream start with Band Bajaa Baaraat, a Yashraj production that was the sleeper hit of the year. Unfortunately for him, his next few films didnt work out. Then Sanjay Leela Bhansali cast him as Ram in Goliyon Ki Rasleela…Ram-Leela, giving him the biggest hit of his career. Also his scorching chemistry with Deepika Padukone spilled off-screen as well! Now, even though there is a little lull in his career again, we are sure SLB’s Bajirao Mastani will work wonders for him again!
Saviour: Mohit Suri
His debut film had him share spotlight with two star kids. His second film, Hasee Toh Phasee, was a breezy romcom that unfortunately didn’t click. But with Mohit Suri’s Ek Villain, he finally put his claim that even he can deliver a power-packed performance in a film that went on to join the hundred-crore club. If Sidharth is still in everyone’s wishlist, it’s all due to this film!
Saviour: Imtiaz Ali
Face it, Alia Bhatt was just a pretty face in Karan Johar’s Student of the Year, where her male co-stars and even the talented supporting cast stole the show! Plus, she was the butt of many jokes following that little gaffe on the episode of Koffee with Karan. Then Imtiaz Ali came in her life withHighway, and we realised that there is much more to this pretty face than those stupid dumb blonde jokes! And she had rarely given us a chance to complain about her acting after that!
Saviour: Aanand L Rai
Sure, Kangana Ranaut was a critically acclaimed actress before Tanu Weds Manu. She had just won a National award for her role in Fashion. But you will also notice she was either doing manic-depressive roles or just being a pretty wallflower in the film. It was Aanand L Rai and his Tanu Weds Manu (even its sequel) that made the viewers see Kangana Ranaut as a fun-loving girl who can do crazy antics with the same enthusiasm as Salman Khan!
Saviour: Homi Adjania
Deepika Padukone had the debut every newcomer could only dream of – a blockbuster with Shah Rukh Khan, directed by Farah Khan. She was much in demand after that, but soon she pretty much fell in rut playing just a pretty girl with a dimpled smile in Bachna Ae Hasaeno, Love Aaj Kal, Housefull, etc. It was Homi Adjania who inspired the actress in this heroine and made her steal every scene from her more experienced co-star, Saif Ali Khan in Cocktail! From then on, she has delivering consistently as an actress often giving enough takkar to stars like Shah Rukh Khan (Chennai Express) and Ranveer Singh (Ram-Leela). They worked again in Finding Fanny, and there too, she was just perfect!
Saviour: Vishal Bharadwaj
Before Kaminey, Shahid Kapoor was just a talented lad with chocolate boy looks and nimble feet. After Kaminey, he finally grew as an actor, who can handle difficult roles as much as his experienced peers. And he owes it all to Vishal Bharadwaj! Even when his films were not working out in the last couple of years, Vishal came to his rescue and gave him Haider – a film that put Shahid back in game, and well as the winner of many Best Actor awards for the year!
Saviour: Mohit Suri
People still think Aashiqui 2 is Shraddha Kapoor’s debut film, which is wrong, since she made her debut in the flop Teen Patti, that had Amitabh Bachchan and Ben Kingsley. She even did a film after that, Luv Ka The End, which also didn’t work. But Mohit Suri gave a fresh lease to her career with Aashiqui 2, and later even in Ek Villain, after which there was no turning back for her! So if someone asked the pretty lady if Aashiqui 2 was her debut film, I am sure she will smile and ignore that gaffe!
Saviour: Vikramaditya Motwane
Sure, Lootera was not a commercial fire-cracker. But if you check Sonakshi Sinha’s entire filmography, you know why this film is so special to her! Even though she may have blockbusters in Dabanng and its sequel, R…Rajkumar, Son of Sardaar, it was Vikramaditya Motwane who showed the world that Sonakshi Sinha can also be a terrific actress if you give her the right role to work her magic on!
