Karan Johar’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil might be one of the most awaited films of this year but its journey definitely hasn’t been that easy. Whether it was the sudden ban on Pakistani artists following the Uri attacks or the MNS protests against retaining Fawad Khan’s scenes in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, Karan Johar was literally made to apologise and beg for his film’s release. I mean, the way how protests were heating up with every passing day, we almost thought Ae Dil Hai Mushkil will either get postponed or will never see the light of the day. But fortunately things settled right before the release and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil as per scheduled, is all set to release tomorrow. Here’s looking back at 7 other controversies surrounding Ae Dil Hai Mushkil- a film which also stars Ranbir Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Anushka Sharma in prominent roles. Read on…
The Bachchans vs Aishwarya
The KRK effect
Now we all knew for a fact that Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is clashing with Ajay Devgn’s Shivaay at the box office and the competition was bound to get aggressive. But little did anyone expect Kamaal R Khan would step in to create unimaginable trouble between Karan and Ajay over ugly politics. It all started after Ajay leaked an audio tape of Kamaal R Khan spilling the beans to one of his associates that Karan bribed him Rs 25 lakh to sabotage Shivaay. While usually such cheap tricks don’t get any much importance. Ajay instead took it way too seriously and actually doubted Karan for dropping his standards so low. In fact, Karan’s lucky charm Kajol too decided to go with Ajay over the same lines and gave up on Karan, once and for all. Sadly, the result of which is now here for you to see today – Kajol for the first time is NOT playing a cameo in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and Ajay for all that you know is going on records taking constant digs at Karan. What destiny holds for this broken relationship? Only time will tell…
Pakistan artistes ban
Now the Uri attacks was unfortunate and India’s decision to cut ties with Pakistan is totally justified. But blame it on its fate, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil became the instant target to face the ire of this ban for it’s the first film to release with a Pakistani actor- Fawad Khan. While Karan Johar helplessly pleaded to be spared for once. This ban also got the industry divided with an outburst like never before. Why ban artists? Artists are not terrorists? Argued Salman Khan and many others who believed ban on Pakistani artistes is not the solution. But the Indian government and IMPAA made sure they keep India as their only priority and passed the judgement that films which have been already shot with Pakistani actors can release but henceforth, there’ll be no collaboration with Pakistan in future. Phew! But the moment we thought Ae Dil has been spared, here came the villains of this scenario – The MNS!
Fawad Go Back!
Despite the government and IMPAA coming into mutual agreement that the films which have been already shot with Pakistani actors can release, MNS cheif Raj Thackeray saw no reason why Ae Dil Hai Mushkil should be spared. His fight against Karan Johar continued where he threatened that there’ll be protests against Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, if at all it hits the screens. In fact, MNS is the one who also gave a 48hours ultimatum to Fawad Khan and all the other Pakistani actors to leave India or they will have to face major consequences. Karan’s worry eventually went from bad to worse..
Exhibitors Boycott over Ae Dil Hai Mushkil
Fearing the MNS protests, the cinema exhibitors association then decided that they too won’t run the film in single screens at cities including Mumbai, Pune. The decision came in reaction to the protests. What if MNS party burns down the theatre? What if they cause damage to our cinema halls? Argued one of the exhibitor stating they stand by the MNS decision and won’t screen Ae Dil Hai Mushkil
The ‘Final’ Rs 5 crore settlement
Finally, Karan Johar was left with no choice but to abide by the MNS demands. Not that he agreed to replace Fawad Khan in the film but in a crucial meeting with Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis, MNS chief Raj Thackeray and Producers guild head Mukesh Bhatt, Karan pledged that he will never collaborate with any Pakistani artists in future. He even agreed to donate Rs 5 crore to the Indian Army Welfare Foundation, as demanded by Fadnavis. In fact, if that’s not all Karan has also agreed to run a few minutes visual paying his obituary to the late martyrs of our country who lost their lives in the Uri attacks. Following which, Raj Thackeray then agreed to withdraw his protests against Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and has allowed a stress free release, only on these above conditions. Phew!
Censor Certificate Leaked!
As if the political issues were any less, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’s Censor Board certificate too got leaked on the internet a few days back. Although it has received an U/A certificate but unlike reports that suggested the film was passed with barely any cuts, the certificate showed a total of as many as 5 cuts with a major 50 percent cut on Anushka’s smooching scenes.
All said and done, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil has successfully overcome all these above hurdles and is FINALLY releasing tomorrow. One last time, let’s hear it for Ae Dil Hai Mushkil!!! How excited are you???
