Baahubali and Dangal changed the face of Indian cinema at the International box office – Here’s why

After the release of Baahubali 2: The Conclusion and its gigantic success at the worldwide box office, many were of opinion that it has changed the face of Indian cinema and from now on, the Indian film industry will be addressed as pre-Baahubali 2 and post-Baahubali 2. And it has been credited rightly so, as no film in the history of Indian cinema has witnessed mass hysteria as this SS Rajamouli’s magnum opus. Various trade analysts have mentioned how the similar or closest hysteria was seen during the time of Sholay or may be at the time of Gadar: Ek Prem Katha. And what makes Baahubali 2 a bigger success is the fact that, at a time when big Bollywood superstars rely on a festive release, it made Rs 1000 crore plus by releasing on a normal holiday.

The only other film which was a close second to Baahubali 2‘s historic figures is Aamir Khan’s Dangal. The sports biopic, upon it’s release, was the biggest hit of Bollywood. Grossing over the then unheard figure of Rs 387 crore.

The reason I am talking about these two films in particular is not just because they are the top two grossers at the box office but for the fact that they put Indian cinema on the map of world cinema. So far none of the films from India had topped the charts of bigger Hollywood markets like China or USA but both Dangal and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion did exactly that. Now that was something unheard of. No one, in their wildest dreams, could have imagined that an Indian film will top the Hollywood market.

Baahubali 2: The Conclusion

Baahubali 2: The Conclusion created history at the US box office on its Thursday previews when it did the unthinkable, the unimaginable by topping the charts. This feat was more majestic because, one, the film was NOT a holiday release, second, it didn’t star the likes of Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan or Salman Khan, third, it beat the biggest box office opener of all times, Fast & Furious 8, fourth, and the most important one, it achieved this feat by releasing in just 425 screens as compared to FnF’s 4000 plus screens.

Check out the box office numbers from Box office mojo:

In fact the first weekend business of Baahubali 2: The Conclusion was at number 3 behind Fast and Furious 8 and beating Tom Hanks and Emma Watson starrer, The Circle.

Apart from the ground breaking numbers film also made a lot commotion in world news. It was a talk of the town in UK, US and various other countries.

Dangal had more or less finished its run by the end of January but it sort of stole Baahubali 2: The Conclusion’s thunder when it saw a release in China on May 5, 2017. The film became the widest Indian release in China beating the screen count of PK. In fact the screen count was even bigger than it got in its home country, India. It saw its release in 10,000 plus screens. And opened strong on China box office but it was its sixth day that did the killing. It, just like Baahubali 2 did the unthinkable by beating Guardians of The Galaxy vol. 2 that too when both were on their sixth day.

While Baahubali 2: The Conclusion has already earned Rs 1000 crore plus at the box office, Dangal is all set to went past that mark as it has already made Rs 900 crore plus at the worldwide box office after China’s haul.

These two films made the world sit up and take notice of Indian cinema. Two films as different as chalk and cheese earning that big and penetrating in the impossible markets. Before the releases it was just a dream, these films made it reality.

Well this is just a beginning, we hope other Indian films will follow the suit and Indian films showing and topping at US and China box office will be a common occurrence.
