Jolly LLB 2 movie review: Akshay Kumar FAILS to fit well in this satirical drama

Jolly LLB 2

Jolly LLB 2

Akshay Kumar is a great actor, his comic timing is fab too, but somehow he doesn’t seem to fit the character of Jagdishwar Mishra aka Jolly in Subhash Kapoor’s satirical comedy Jolly LLB 2. The first part Jolly LLB had Arshad Warsi play the protagonist and he somehow fit this bill of a loser lawyer trying to find a footing. The premise of the first part was extremely organic and full of surprises unlike the current one, which is way too predictable and preachy. What’s worse is that Akshay with his tall fit frame fails to look like a LOSER. And it’s not his failure as an actor, it is just that the actor wasn’t suitable for the role. Here’s the review…

What’s it about

Those who have watched the promos would know that the film like its predecessor is about a lawyer who finds a way in life and career through a PIL (Public Interest Litigation). In this case, Jolly urf Jagdishwar Mishra is a lawyer by degree but has not fought a single case, despite working at a legal firm owned by a Nawab (Rizviji) for years. Jolly wants to be a real lawyer and not Rizviji’s 15th assistant. His only dream is to own a lawyer’s chamber and make his father proud. Unfortunately Jolly takes the easy way to make his dream come true and ends up losing respect amongst his peers. But that’s not what changes the course of Jolly’s life, he has tricked a desperate client, Hina (Sayani Gupta) seeking legal help from Rizvi’s team of lawyers to get justice for her husband Iqbal Qasim (Manav Kaul), who was shot in a fake encounter by cop Suryaveer Singh (Kumud Mishra). Jolly not only takes on Suryaveer, his top lawyer Sachin Kantilal Mathur (Annu Kapoor), but also the corrupt law and order system with this one case.

What’s hot

Subhash Kapoor retains some gems from his original, Saurabh Shukla (Judge Tripathy) and Sanjay Mishra (Guruji). Akshay Kumar as a lawyer is handsome and funny even in his not-so-fashionable avatar. The actor’s honesty at portraying a character that just refuses to fit him well is commendable. And even though Akshay is the hero of the film, it is the characters of Annu Kapoor and Saurabh Shukla that manage to extract the most reactions from you as an audience. Annu Kapoor as the annoying and obnoxious Mr Mathur makes you hate and laugh with him at the same time. Saurabh Shukla manages to stand tall despite his teddy frame and makes you reminisce his act in the first part.

The dialogues are funny in most parts and the makers have woven in some very obvious filmi references beautifully in the movie. Like for example, when Judge Tripathy asks Jolly to stop acting like Sunny Deol (from Damini) and then again makes another reference when he quizzes Jolly if he has indeed started behaving like Sunny Deol is damn funny. There are also some very unintentional funny moments that are typical to an Akshay Kumar comedy. In one serious exchange between Jolly and pregnant Hina, there’s a hint at Jolly getting Hina pregnant in a not so obvious way and that’s indeed dark yet laughter inducing. Or then when Jolly’s wife Pushpa Pande (Huma Qureshi) is the only one who stands up to clap on hearing her husband’s awesome dialogue delivery in the courtroom.

Even in her cameo Sayani Gupta manages to impress with her portrayal of Hina, while Huma Qureshi delivers even in her minuscule role of Akki’s wife.

In that sense, Jolly LLB 2 can be called as a “masala satirical drama”.

What’s not

If you watched Jolly LLB and loved it, we bet you will miss Arshad Warsi terribly. And again let me assure you it’s not Akshay’s fault, it is the makers who get trapped in his superstar aura. There are few things that are very wrong about Subhash’s attempt at recreating the first part’s magic. JLLB2 gets extremely preachy and boring to a point where you almost end up losing focus. Some instances just don’t fit logic, like Jolly’s salary is a meagre Rs 15,000 but he’s impeccably suited. Yes, they did get Akshay to wear one sports shoes throughout the film however he’s pretty well turned out otherwise.

The storytelling itself fails miserably, ‘coz you do not empathise with Jolly or his fight against the system. Things come a little too easy to him and he manages to wriggle out of some very sticky situations a little too comfortably. The courtroom drama drags at points and fails to tickle your funny bone. Some of the punchlines are a little too inspired and lack originality. There’s also a very blatant brand plug where we see Akshay flaunt a vest that he promotes.

Looks like Subhash Kapoor who had managed to extract fabulous performances from his actors in the first part, fell into the “smitten by star” and “mainstream cinema” trap.

What to do

If you are an Akshay Kumar fan, you might enjoy Jolly LLB 2. But if you watched this film coz you loved Arshad Warsi’s Jolly LLB then there are chances that you’ll walk out disappointed.

Rating:2.5 out of 5

Akshay Kumar’s Jolly LLB 2 to release on February 10, 2017 – view new poster!

Jolly LLB 2

Jolly LLB 2

As promised by Akshay Kumar, he has officially revealed his look from the upcoming film Jolly LLB 2. Earlier in the day he posted a teaser poster of the film. Jolly was riding a scooter in the poster but we didn’t quite get a good look at his face. In this new poster released, we see Jolly smile for the camera looking all jolly. Akshay is sporting a moustache in this avatar, and we must say it is suiting him just perfect. Also the release date of the film has been revealed to be February 10, 2017.

Akshay Kumar made the best use of Twitter as a platform to reveal his look. He shared the pic on his social media platform and wrote “And here is the first look of #JollyLLB2 as promised. Ready to meet this Jolly good fellow on 10th Feb. 2017” .

Akshay has quite a few films lined up for next year. Apart from Jolly LLB 2, he also has Toilet Ek Prem Katha with Bhumi Pednekar, which is already making headlines thanks to its quirky title. Also there is Neeraj Pandey’s Crack releasing in August 2016. And then of course there is 2.0 with Rajinikanth, in which Akshay plays the monstrous villain. Also he has a special appearance in the spin off of his hit film Baby, titled Naam Shabana, which will focus on the story of Meera played by Taapsee Pannu.

Jolly LLB 2 is the sequel of the 2013 sleeper hit Jolly LLB that starred Arshad Warsi in the lead role and playing the titular charcater. In the sequel makers wanted a bigger name and hence Arshad was replaced with Akshay. Saurabh Shukla reprises his character of the judge in the second installment as well. The sequel, which has been shot in Lucknow and Varanasi, also stars Huma Qureshi.

Arshad Warsi on being replaced has said, “It makes it easier for marketing, it makes it easier to have a hit. With me, you (the filmmakers) have to make a good film, so that is the problem. You can make money with me only if it’s a very good film. If you have a bigger star, then even if the film is not that good, you still manage to cover the money so risk factor from the producer’s point of view is less.”

Akshay Kumar to BEAT Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan in the box office game- find out how!

He is rightfully termed as the most bankable star of Bollywood.

Salman Khan‘s film Sultan might have broken many records, but Akshay Kumar is one superstar who sets his own records. The Khiladi Kumar might just create history if his film Rustom enters the Rs 100 crores club this year. And  if trade predictions are to be believed then there’s no stopping Akshay from setting Rs 100 crores hattrick record.

Akshay‘s films may not do business like Sultan or a PK or even a Chennai Express, but Khiladi Kumar is surely the most bankable star we have today. Since his debut inSaugandh, he has been consistently churning out successful movies.

This year started on a high note for Akshay, with his movie Airlift doing well both critically and commercially, not to forget it entered the Rs 100 crores club domestically. Few months later, he gave another Rs 100 crores hit domestically with Housefull 3. On August 12, the actor will be back again on silver screen with one of his hottest movies in trade circles, Rustom. This will be his third movie this year and if it touches 100 crores as well, this will be a record where a top star delivers three back-to-back Rs 100 crores films in a year. No Khan in Bollywood has ever achieved this feat.

Of course Rustom is releasing alongside Hrithik Roshan‘s Mohenjo Daro and both are big films to start with but as per our trade expert and editor of Super Cinema Mr Amul Mohan, even this face-off cannot stop Akshay from delivering a hit. Mohan said, “ObviouslyRustom is a big film and its trailer has been hugely liked by the audience. In fact, both films (Rustom and Mohenjo Daro) are big and of course when two big films release on a same day they eat into each other’s business.” He also added, “I don’t want to compare both the movies but Akshay may have an edge due to his successful stint at the box office this year with two super hits Airlift and Housefull 3 with both doing Rs 100 crores plus business at domestic box office and due to all round positive response to the trailer of Rustom.”

While this feat of giving three 100 crores successes in a  single year may be unheard off for an A list male star, it’s definitely not new for Bollywood, if one remembers correctly, Deepika Padukone gave, not three but, four Rs 100 crores plus successes in the year 2013- Race 2, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Chennai Express and Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela all joining Rs 100 crores club.

We can only hope the Rowdy Rathore star delivers another Rs 100 crores success and create a record which will be difficult to break as no other top male star releases more than two movies in a year.

The First Poster Of Akshay Kumar’s Rustom Is Now Out!

We earlier saw Akshay Kumar‘s look in Rustom, and now the first poster is out. The film tells the story of Naval Officer K M Nanavati, who murdered his wife’s lover and subsequently turned himself in.

Rustom also stars Ileana D’Cruz and Esha Gupta and is due for release on August 12th, 2016.

What do you think of the first poster?

The Reason Why Sajid Khan Did Not Direct Housefull 3

Filmmaker Sajid Khan, who had directed Housefull and Housefull 2, chose to step out of Housefull 3 himself, says producer Sajid Nadiadwala.

“Sajid Khan didn’t want to direct Housefull 3 because he was busy with Himmatwala at that time. Besides, this is a difficult genre to write also,” said Sajid Nadiadwala.

“After sometime, they also say that we don’t want to because the genre gets saturated. So, it becomes difficult to edit and make a trailer for this film. Usually, a writer, after one or two films gets into a saturation mode,” added Mr Nadiadwala.

Housefull 3, featuring Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh, Abhishek Bachchan, Jacqueline Fernandez, Nargis Fakhri, and Lisa Haydon, has been directed by Sajid-Farhad.

Housefull 3 is scheduled to release on June 3.

Akshay Kumar Wrote This Heartfelt Open Letter To Stuntmen!

Akshay Kumar is known for the amazing action sequences he pulls off in movies.  Though he’s famous for doing most of his own stunts, he’s often gone on record to give credit to the stuntmen and women who work with him.  International stunt coordinator Scott Cosgrove, with whom Akshay was supposed to work with in his next film, passed away and Akki wrote an open letter to bring everyone’s attention to the stuntmen.

Check it out!

To all the stuntmen and women out there, I just heard another great international stuntman, who has actually worked in my own industry, and was going to come and train with me has sadly passed away. I not only believe you all should be winning Oscars or Indian awards for your incredible work, in my eyes, you should also be acknowledged globally for saving our lives and the credibility of our films. It pains me, because I know the one expert that an actor/actress can’t live without, during their shoot, is their stuntbuddy. Hadn’t it been for your unbelievable hard work and amazing talent that make our movies look good and help us earn so much, we would be mourning the death of so many actors/actresses.

Instead, the stunt community is quietly mourning the ones they’ve lost, be it by accident, injury or fatality on the sets of award-winning films over the years. I know winning an award still isn’t enough for what you all painfully go through for these million-dollar projects, but it would be a small start. Sadly, the fraternity is barely even honouring you with that. I just want you to know, coming from a stuntman/actor like myself, I admire, respect, honour and am eternally grateful for everything that you all do. My children still have their father in one piece because there is always someone prepared to take the fall that I may not be able to. To all the stuntmen and women I have ever worked alongside, around the world, you are always in my and my family’s prayers. You deserve so much more than just a wage packet, and I hope I live long enough to see a change in that. I know that in my 25-yearlong career nothing much has changed! But it will, and I will try and make sure of that… Till then Thank You and take great care. Good luck with the fight for your rights… RIP to all those who have lost their lives.

Love & Prayers

AK the Actor/AK the stuntman…

Predicting the box office fates of Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, Priyanka Chopra for 2016!

So who will rule 2016? We can offer some predictions…

2015 was Salman Khan’s year…no two words about that! The man literally ruled the year with the super successes of Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, and can be proclaimed the most bankable star in the current lot?

But will he maintain the status quo in 2016? Will Aamir Khan, who didn’t have a single release in 2015, overtake him? Or SRK, who has two releases in 2016?  What about the heroines? Since Deepika doesn’t have a single release next year, will Priyanka, Kangana capitulate on her absence?

Here are some prediction of ten top stars who will be having their big releases next year, and how their films will fare!

Shah Rukh Khan

Films: Fan

Even though it reached the 100-crore club, Shah Rukh Khan’s Dilwale may not have pleased many. However, he has a chance to redeem himself, with two very different films next year (three, if the Gauri Shinde untitled film manages to hit the marquee next year). Fan which releases first has SRK in dual roles – one, a superstar with a huge following, and the other, one of his ardent followers. It is directed by Maneesh Sharma, of Band Baaja Baarat fame, so expect it to be grounded and not be a typical SRK blockbuster. So we don’t expect it to be potential candidate for the 200 crore club, though it could garner critical acclaim, especially for the performances.

Verdict: A Critical Hit

Film: Raees

A few months after Fan, SRK will be seen in a tough role of a Gujrati don in Rahul Dholakia’s Raees, that’s jointly produced by Red Chillies and Farhan Akhtar’s Excel Entertainment. The films also stars Mahira Khan and powerhouse performer, Nawazuddin Siddiqui. Again, this is not a typical SRK film, but going by the response to the first tease, we expect the film to have a thunderous start. Also there are rumours going around that Sultan may get postponed to October, so Raees could have EID all to itself, and hence better collections!

Verdict: Blockbuster!

Salman Khan

Film: Sultan

Do I even need to predict anything here? Salman Khan is in the best phase of his career, and anything he touches turns to platinum, forget gold! Sultan is his solo release in 2016, and if rumours that’re going around are right, it may not release on Eid along with Raees. Instead, it may come out in September. The point to note is longer the delay, the more the anticipation. So Sultan will definitely have a bumper opening. Also, his new look has been praised a lot, and he could also gain some brownie points from the critics for his performance.

Verdict: Sure-shot blockbuster!

Aamir Khan

Film: Dangal

We can never question Aamir Khan’s ingenuity. The man knows how to mix things up. On one hand, he does complete masal stuff like Dhoom 3 and PK, and on the other hand, he lends himself to serious cinema like Dhobi Ghaat. Dangal come after 2 years, since PK’s release, and there was no release for the actor in 2015. So his fans would be really eager to wait what surprise the actor had in store for them. However, Dangal is a biopic and is not looking like a typical mainstream film, hence it’s reach could be limited. However, Aamir’s performance would be definitely be lauded by all and sundry!

Verdict: Critics’ favourite, would reach 100 crore club, thanks to Aamir’s marketing genius!

Akshay Kumar

Film: Airlift

While no one’s gone praising around, Akshay Kumar also had a brilliant 2015, with all of his films, be it Baby, Brothers and Singh is Bliing working at the box office. 2016 starts off for the actor with Airlift, which by all that we have seen from the promos till now, is a film to watch out for. Again. it’s not a typical mainstream film, therefore has a restricted audience. But if Baby worked, so can Airlift, especially since the other major releases in January happen to be Ghayal Once Again, and two sex comedies!

Verdict: Success with critics, and will do fairly well at the box office!

Film: Housefull 3

Both the films of the Housefull franchise, even though they were helmed by Sajid Khan, were box office hit. Sure, there were no-brainers, but going by the success rate, the audience doesn’t care much about logic or the lack of it. The third film that will release in 2016 will again see Akshay Kumar returning to slapstick comedy with Riteish Deshmukh and a new prankster for company, Abhishek Bachchan. And with history by its side, it’s a definite…

Verdict: 100-crore club member!

Hrithik Roshan

Film: Mohenjo Dharo

Like Aamir Khan, even Hrithik Roshan returns to screen after two years for this prehistoric adventure drama. So naturally, there is a lot of excitement built around the project, especially about the ancient setting on which the premise is based. The last time Hrithik and Ashutosh Gowariker worked together, it resulted in a surprise hit in Jodhaa Akbar. However, Ashutosh’s box office performance after that is definitely not enviable. So people don’t have much expectations of the film. But who knows…if Shyamalan can make a comeback of sorts with The Visit, so can Ashutosh!

Verdict: Could be a surprise winner!

Priyanka Chopra

Film: Jai Gangaajal

Priyanka Chopra may have scored 2015 with some brilliant performances in Dil Dhadakne Do,Bajirao Mastani and even her TV series Quantico. However, she has only one release in 2016, that is Jai Gangaajal. While the actress must be appreciated for taking on such a gritty role of a female top cop, the trailer shown to us last week was less than promising and looked more like an acting showreel of director Prakash Jha. Unless there is some surprise element in the film or if it is even a patch of the original Ajay Devgn-starrer Gangajal, we don’t have too much hopes on this!

Verdict: Could get a great start, but can end up as an average grosser

Alia Bhatt

Film: Kapoor and Sons

Alia Bhatt has two different releases this year. First one of the Karan Johar produced Kapoor and Sons, that co-stars Sidharth Malhotra, Fawad Khan and Rishi Kapoor. The plot of the film sounds promising, and since it’s a Dharma production, expect it to have some really great visuals. Also, they have a good record with romantic dramas, so this can be a winner

Verdict: Winner

Film: Udta Punjab

Alia Bhatt’s second film of the year is Abhishek Chaubey’s Udta Punjab, where she will be paired with Shahid Kapoor. The film will also star Kareena Kapoor Khan and Diljith Dosanjh. Although Chaubey has helmed the critically acclaimed Ishqiya franchise, only the first film has worked well with the audience (though the second was far better). And by what we heard about UP, it is also equally dark in its tone!

Verdict: A Critic’s fave, but may not hold well at the box office!

Kangana Ranaut

Film: Rangoon

Kangana Ranaut will be working for the first time with Vishal Bharadwaj in Rangoon. She will also be paired for the first time with Saif Ali Khan and Shahid Kapoor. Vishal has seldom gone wrong with the quality of his films, though none of his films are not exactly 100 crore club members. Kangana too had a patchy 2015, with Tanu Weds manu Returns turning out to be a blockbuster, only to be negated by the dismal failures of I Love NY and Katti Batti. This period romance drama of hers could get her regain her lost ground, tough it would never be too big a hit like TWMR!

Verdict: Can bowl over critics and multiplex audiences!

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan

Film: Sarabjit

The biopic of a man trapped in Pakistan jail for years before he was killed, and of his sister’s futile struggles to get him out is not a mainstream topic. Omung Kumar’s debut flick Mary Kom was an uplifting movie, but here the tale could turn out too depressing for the audience. Not that we are saying that it will not turn out to be a good film, but not every emotional story has a great record at the box office! Also Ash’s comeback film, Jazbaa, fared to do well, so there’s there…

Verdict: An average grosser at best!

Film: Ae Dil Hai Mushkil

This is a Karan Johar film. And Karan Johar has never gone wrong with his directorials. It has a great cast in Ash, Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Fawad Khan. Since it is a KJo film, it is definite to have some great music. Also, since it’s a KJo film, the marketing will be quite great. I hope you release where I am going with this…

Verdict: Superhit!

Katrina Kaif

Film: Fitoor

Abhishek Kapoor last two films as a directors had bowled us over, be it Rock on or Kai Po Che. Both were successes at the box office as well. However his latest film, Fitoor, an adaptation of Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations, has run into a lot of hassles during the production, major being Rekha walking out of the film, and hastily being replaced by Tabu. Also both the lead stars, Katrina Kaif and Aditya Roy Kapoor’s last films have tanked, so there is less buzz about them. So it’s quite an uphill task for the makers of the film.

Verdict: A difficult proposition, unless Abhishek Kapoor has an ace hidden in his sleeve…

Film: Jagga Jasoos

Another film of Kat’s that is getting delayed thanks to post-production woes. With actors getting chopped off completely (We are talking about you, Govinda), to numerous reshoots, to the news that the Anurag Basu film will have too many songs, we are not sure whether to be excited or scared! The only thing we are excited about this film that she is paired u with her real life boyfriend, Ranbir Kapoor. And also Ranbir and Anurag has given us the wonderful Barfi…

Verdict: Can either tank or turn out to be a surprise like Tamasha!

Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar has extended a helping hand to the rain ravaged people of Chennai by donating Rs 1 crore for relief work.

Following Suhasini’s suggestion, he donated Rs 1 crore to Bhoomika Trust, which has been preparing and distributing food items since the day Chennai was hit by torrential rain.

Filmmaker Jayendra, managing trustee of Bhoomika Trust, received the cheque from Akshay.

Not long ago, Shah Rukh Khan and the team of Dilwale donated Rs 1 crore for the relief work.
