Pahlaj Nihalani Lashes Out At Pakistan Censor Board’s Ban On Raees

Branding the new Shah Rukh Khan starrer Raees as “anti-Muslim,” Pakistan’s censor board has banned its release in Pakistan, a crippling blow for the morale of the film’s Pakistani’s leading lady. Having missed out on the film’s release and post-release euphoria in India, Mahira Khan was hoping to enjoy the film with the audience in Pakistan and to savour the fruits of success first-hand.

“The two Khans together (Shah Rukh and Mahira)… it means a lot to the audience here,” Mahira had excitedly said to me over the phone.

However, that was not to be. On Monday evening, Pakistan’s censor board banned the film, a move that has not gone down well with Pahlaj Nihalani, the Indian censor board’s chairperson.

Says Mr Nihalani:

What do they mean by saying Raees is anti-Muslim? Do they care more about the sensitivities of the community than we do? Let me remind them that there are more Muslims in India than in Pakistan. And we at the CBFC (Censor Board Of Film Certification) follow guidelines regarding the sensitivities of all communities very carefully.”

The CBFC chairperson refuses to accept the Pakistan censor board’s verdict on Raees:

The protagonist in Raees is shown to be a Robin Hood. He helps the needy, works for the betterment of the poor, dislikes dishonesty and respects his country. More than all these factors, it is Shah Rukh Khan who plays Raees. Does the Pakistan’s censors think a superstar of Shah Rukh’s stature would play an anti-Muslim character? Shah Rukh is always careful not to hurt anyone’e sentiments.”

Pahlaj Nihalani sees the ban as a huge setback to Pakistan’s film industry:

The ban on Indian films had just been lifted by Pakistan’s government bringing relief to the movie theatres. Now the Pakistani censor board bans the biggest blockbuster of the season. I am sorry to say this won’t stop Pakistanis from seeing the film. They will watch the film on pirated videos and on the internet. They want to see their own Khan (Mahira) with King Khan. They can’t be stopped.”

He doesn’t see this “unfair” ban as the end of the road for Raees in Pakistan: “The film’s Pakistani distributors can go to the revising committee who will hopefully see that Raees is not anti-Muslim. It is anti-crime.”

“Nothing Hurts Me” – Shah Rukh Khan Responds To Rakesh Roshan’s Allegations

Raees vs Kaabil

Raees vs Kaabil

The Raees Vs Kaabil clash will probably go down in history as one of the biggest clashes Bollywood has seen. Both teams went all out to promote the film in unique ways and from the looks of it, it has paid off. Despite the films doing well, Rakesh Roshan has come out and cried foul. He has accused Team Raees and the distributors of breaking their promise. Reportedly, the screens were meant to be divided equally between the two but eventually 60% of the screens were given to Shah Rukh Khan, while Hrithik‘s Kaabil got the remaining 40%. This upset senior Roshan and he didn’t hesitate to call out distributors!

SRK has finally spoken on the matter with DNA and here’s what he said.

No, nothing hurts me. I know what I do, I know what feelings I have. And the main feeling that I have is I do things above board and honestly. I don’t need to say it to anyone or prove it, specially on a public platform. I don’t need to be justifying anything. I have been here long enough. I respect everybody and more than that, I respect my honesty and my earnestness in the way I do business so I am not going to react to XYZ or anyone saying anything about me. You can say, ask, complain or talk.”

He still loves Hrithik and wishes the team well.

Personally, I have huge amount of respect for Rakesh Roshan and Hrithik. I love them and I wish them the best. I think their film is doing good enough, they should be happy.”

It’s about time they buried the hatchet, don’t you think?

The ‘Raees’ Team Is Throwing A Success Party – With A Twist

When we spoke to Shah Rukh Khan recently after the release of Raees, he told us that he’s pleased with the film’s reception and that the entire team was planning on throwing a success party soon. Well, that seems to be scheduled for Monday evening – January 30th – but it’ll be slightly different than your usual Bollywood success party.

They’ve decided that, keeping in with the theme of the film, they’d be throwing a party without any alcohol at all. Incidentally, January 30th is a dry day, making it a good day for them to celebrate in this way.

C0-producer Ritesh Sidhwani says:

The entire team is very happy with the critical acclaim & audience reaction to the film, it’s been a perfect combination. It seems that all efforts have come to fruition hence we want to celebrate this occasion with everyone who has been a part of this journey.”

The film is said to have crossed the 60cr mark in 3 days, and they’re expecting an increase in collections throughout this weekend.

The Makers Of Kaabil Are Accusing Team Raees Of Foul Play

Raees vs Kaabil

Raees vs Kaabil

While movie buffs have their hands full with 2 promising films starring Bollywood superstars releasing this week – the makers of Kaabil and Raees are reportedly at loggerheads. Although the main leads, Shah Rukh Khan and Hrithik Roshan wished the best for each other, things don’t look very good as of now.

Kaabil‘s director Sanjay Gupta and producer Rakesh Roshan have reportedly cried foul as the distributors have given them 60-40 screens (60 for Raees and 40 for Kaabil) against the 50-50 ratio initially promised to them. According to a report in DNA, the exhibitors may have done this as they were promised Bahubaali 2 if they gave more screens to the SRK starrer.

Rakesh Roshan spoke to DNA about the alleged bias and said:

I wont comment upon any other film as that’s not my territory. I will only talk about my film Kaabil. We are shocked, disappointed and terribly hurt! I had not expected this. I spoke to all my concerned exhibitors last week, showed them one hour of the film and requested them that we should go 50-50 screens and they agreed. All over the world from Dubai, UK, Australia and New Zealand they have given us 50-50 screens except in our industry. That’s very hurtful to me and I feel betrayed because after talking to them, they did this. With these clashes, we have to avoid unfair play. Every producer feels my film is the best where he is concerned and where two films are coming if we avoid this and make both films 50-50 screens then it’s better for the film industry.”

A Local Politician Died In A Rush To See Shah Rukh Khan In Vadodara

Shah Rukh Khan

Shah Rukh Khan

As part of the promotions of Raees, Shah Rukh Khan boarded the August Kranti Rajdhani Express from Mumbai to Delhi yesterday. What was envisaged as a happy journey, did not go as planned as a man unfortunately died during the commotion.

At around 10:30 PM last night, the train had halted at a Vadodara station for 10 minutes, and needless to say, SRK fans had gathered in large numbers to catch a glimpse of their favourite actor. The crowd went out of control and the police had to resort to mild lathi charge. The unfortunate incident happened soon after that when the train started moving and the crowd started running along. The man died due to breathlessness followed by a cardiac arrest.

The deceased has reportedly been identified as Farheed Khan Pathan, a local politician.

As Raees trailer crosses 10m views, Shah Rukh Khan gets a Bollywood standing ovation

Raees trailer: Shah Rukh Khan came up with the trailer of his much-awaited film Raees, the whole nation went gaga over it.

As soon as Shah Rukh Khan came up with the trailer of his much-awaited film Raees, the whole nation went gaga over it. And it had to be so. The very proof of the same is that it came out on December 7 and in just 20 hours the Raees trailer has crossed 10.5 million record breaking views on Youtube. Thus this SRK film’s trailer has become the fastest to do so, ever in the history of Indian cinema.

The gripping trailer has successfully topped the list by surpassing the trailer of Sultan which had raked in 100K likes in 42 hours, Dangal in 8 hours 48 minutes, Shivaay in 23 hours and MS Dhoni: The Untold Story in 12 hours. Following the unveiling of the two and a half minute trailer, the hashtag #RaeesTrailer was trending on social media all day, as fans and critics shared their excitement about the film.

But Bollywood biggies have a special note for SRK.

“OMG!!! SHAHRUKH KHAN!!!! Amazing can’t wait to see the film!!!” wrote Karan Johar on his Twitter page. While Dia Mirza tweeted, “Baaap re!!!! Talent ka godown!!! So much talent all in one film!!! And that “Laila” riff is ufffff #CantWait #Raees.”

“The star and the actor @iamsrk in one deadly package – #RaeesTrailer promises total ???? (dhamaka)! @rahuldholakia,” wrote Hansal Mehta. Diana Penty wrote, “@iamsrk and @Nawazuddin_S are ???????? in the #RaeesTrailer! Can’t wait to watch them on the big screen @FarOutAkhtar @ritesh_sid @rahuldholakia.”

“Wow!! now that’s awesome n has to be as it has @iamsrk !!!brilliant sir!!” tweeted Manish Paul. He also shared a message for Sunny Leone. “Hard work pays!!! @SunnyLeone so happy to see u in d #RaeesTrailer !!! More power to u girl,” posted Manish.

Directed by Rahul Dholakia Raees is set to clash with Hrithik Roshan’s Kaabil, a day before Republic Day 2017.

Sorry Shah Rukh Khan, Kaabil may not be able to move from January 26, 2017

Yesterday, Shah Rukh Khan met up with Rakesh Roshan at his residence probably in a bid to push Kaabil from the January 26, 2016 date which he is eyeing for Raees. The tweet that followed from the actor hinted that a midway may have been found. SRK had written, “Met friend/mentor/family after many a days.Mr. R.Roshan reminded me…it’s not important to do 2 much, it’s important to get 1 right. Thx sir.” But it seems nothing of the sort can avert this clash, even Hrithik Roshan can’t help here. Our trade expert and Editor of Super Cinema Amul Mohan revealed something about Kaabil that might make the shift difficult.
Amul Mohan said, “As far as I know I don’t think Kaabil is going to move from the spot. That’s because they have sold a few territories to distributors. It’s already in place to show the film on a particular date. In an ideal world, Shah Rukh Khan would want a solo release. But I don’t think it will be the case this time. Let’s see what happens. It’s not in the hands of Hrithik Roshan right now. If something can be arranged mutually, it will be beneficial for both the films.”
Mohan is however hopeful that there’s lot of time for release and things can change. “There is a lot of time till January rolls around and lot of things will go up and down till that point.” We hope the makers will decide something and avoid this clash. As has been said repeatedly, India doesn’t have that many screens to host two big releases. Both will eat into each other’s profit and the end, there won’t be a clear winner, especially now when the stakes are higher. But it is very interesting to notice how a film which is still getting shot already got a few territories sold. It means people are expecting big things from Kaabil. Should Raees be concerned?

OMG! Is Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees Postponed For Salman Khan’s Sultan?

Shah Rukh Khan‘s Raees and Salman Khan‘s Sultan is resulting in a clash of the titans in Bollywood as both the films are slated for an Eid release. However, the news of a rather exciting development in the clash came out recently.

Trade analyst Komal Nahta tweeted the news of the year when he said:

“And now, here’s the news of the year!! ShahRukhKhan’s Raees has been postponed. It will NOT clash with SalmanKhan’s Sultan on Eid this year.”

But Ritesh Sidhwani, co-producer of Raees, tweeted:

“Some people spreading Rumours about #Raees release being moved.. Like I said RUMOURS.”

What is happening, you guys?

Predicting the box office fates of Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, Priyanka Chopra for 2016!

So who will rule 2016? We can offer some predictions…

2015 was Salman Khan’s year…no two words about that! The man literally ruled the year with the super successes of Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, and can be proclaimed the most bankable star in the current lot?

But will he maintain the status quo in 2016? Will Aamir Khan, who didn’t have a single release in 2015, overtake him? Or SRK, who has two releases in 2016?  What about the heroines? Since Deepika doesn’t have a single release next year, will Priyanka, Kangana capitulate on her absence?

Here are some prediction of ten top stars who will be having their big releases next year, and how their films will fare!

Shah Rukh Khan

Films: Fan

Even though it reached the 100-crore club, Shah Rukh Khan’s Dilwale may not have pleased many. However, he has a chance to redeem himself, with two very different films next year (three, if the Gauri Shinde untitled film manages to hit the marquee next year). Fan which releases first has SRK in dual roles – one, a superstar with a huge following, and the other, one of his ardent followers. It is directed by Maneesh Sharma, of Band Baaja Baarat fame, so expect it to be grounded and not be a typical SRK blockbuster. So we don’t expect it to be potential candidate for the 200 crore club, though it could garner critical acclaim, especially for the performances.

Verdict: A Critical Hit

Film: Raees

A few months after Fan, SRK will be seen in a tough role of a Gujrati don in Rahul Dholakia’s Raees, that’s jointly produced by Red Chillies and Farhan Akhtar’s Excel Entertainment. The films also stars Mahira Khan and powerhouse performer, Nawazuddin Siddiqui. Again, this is not a typical SRK film, but going by the response to the first tease, we expect the film to have a thunderous start. Also there are rumours going around that Sultan may get postponed to October, so Raees could have EID all to itself, and hence better collections!

Verdict: Blockbuster!

Salman Khan

Film: Sultan

Do I even need to predict anything here? Salman Khan is in the best phase of his career, and anything he touches turns to platinum, forget gold! Sultan is his solo release in 2016, and if rumours that’re going around are right, it may not release on Eid along with Raees. Instead, it may come out in September. The point to note is longer the delay, the more the anticipation. So Sultan will definitely have a bumper opening. Also, his new look has been praised a lot, and he could also gain some brownie points from the critics for his performance.

Verdict: Sure-shot blockbuster!

Aamir Khan

Film: Dangal

We can never question Aamir Khan’s ingenuity. The man knows how to mix things up. On one hand, he does complete masal stuff like Dhoom 3 and PK, and on the other hand, he lends himself to serious cinema like Dhobi Ghaat. Dangal come after 2 years, since PK’s release, and there was no release for the actor in 2015. So his fans would be really eager to wait what surprise the actor had in store for them. However, Dangal is a biopic and is not looking like a typical mainstream film, hence it’s reach could be limited. However, Aamir’s performance would be definitely be lauded by all and sundry!

Verdict: Critics’ favourite, would reach 100 crore club, thanks to Aamir’s marketing genius!

Akshay Kumar

Film: Airlift

While no one’s gone praising around, Akshay Kumar also had a brilliant 2015, with all of his films, be it Baby, Brothers and Singh is Bliing working at the box office. 2016 starts off for the actor with Airlift, which by all that we have seen from the promos till now, is a film to watch out for. Again. it’s not a typical mainstream film, therefore has a restricted audience. But if Baby worked, so can Airlift, especially since the other major releases in January happen to be Ghayal Once Again, and two sex comedies!

Verdict: Success with critics, and will do fairly well at the box office!

Film: Housefull 3

Both the films of the Housefull franchise, even though they were helmed by Sajid Khan, were box office hit. Sure, there were no-brainers, but going by the success rate, the audience doesn’t care much about logic or the lack of it. The third film that will release in 2016 will again see Akshay Kumar returning to slapstick comedy with Riteish Deshmukh and a new prankster for company, Abhishek Bachchan. And with history by its side, it’s a definite…

Verdict: 100-crore club member!

Hrithik Roshan

Film: Mohenjo Dharo

Like Aamir Khan, even Hrithik Roshan returns to screen after two years for this prehistoric adventure drama. So naturally, there is a lot of excitement built around the project, especially about the ancient setting on which the premise is based. The last time Hrithik and Ashutosh Gowariker worked together, it resulted in a surprise hit in Jodhaa Akbar. However, Ashutosh’s box office performance after that is definitely not enviable. So people don’t have much expectations of the film. But who knows…if Shyamalan can make a comeback of sorts with The Visit, so can Ashutosh!

Verdict: Could be a surprise winner!

Priyanka Chopra

Film: Jai Gangaajal

Priyanka Chopra may have scored 2015 with some brilliant performances in Dil Dhadakne Do,Bajirao Mastani and even her TV series Quantico. However, she has only one release in 2016, that is Jai Gangaajal. While the actress must be appreciated for taking on such a gritty role of a female top cop, the trailer shown to us last week was less than promising and looked more like an acting showreel of director Prakash Jha. Unless there is some surprise element in the film or if it is even a patch of the original Ajay Devgn-starrer Gangajal, we don’t have too much hopes on this!

Verdict: Could get a great start, but can end up as an average grosser

Alia Bhatt

Film: Kapoor and Sons

Alia Bhatt has two different releases this year. First one of the Karan Johar produced Kapoor and Sons, that co-stars Sidharth Malhotra, Fawad Khan and Rishi Kapoor. The plot of the film sounds promising, and since it’s a Dharma production, expect it to have some really great visuals. Also, they have a good record with romantic dramas, so this can be a winner

Verdict: Winner

Film: Udta Punjab

Alia Bhatt’s second film of the year is Abhishek Chaubey’s Udta Punjab, where she will be paired with Shahid Kapoor. The film will also star Kareena Kapoor Khan and Diljith Dosanjh. Although Chaubey has helmed the critically acclaimed Ishqiya franchise, only the first film has worked well with the audience (though the second was far better). And by what we heard about UP, it is also equally dark in its tone!

Verdict: A Critic’s fave, but may not hold well at the box office!

Kangana Ranaut

Film: Rangoon

Kangana Ranaut will be working for the first time with Vishal Bharadwaj in Rangoon. She will also be paired for the first time with Saif Ali Khan and Shahid Kapoor. Vishal has seldom gone wrong with the quality of his films, though none of his films are not exactly 100 crore club members. Kangana too had a patchy 2015, with Tanu Weds manu Returns turning out to be a blockbuster, only to be negated by the dismal failures of I Love NY and Katti Batti. This period romance drama of hers could get her regain her lost ground, tough it would never be too big a hit like TWMR!

Verdict: Can bowl over critics and multiplex audiences!

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan

Film: Sarabjit

The biopic of a man trapped in Pakistan jail for years before he was killed, and of his sister’s futile struggles to get him out is not a mainstream topic. Omung Kumar’s debut flick Mary Kom was an uplifting movie, but here the tale could turn out too depressing for the audience. Not that we are saying that it will not turn out to be a good film, but not every emotional story has a great record at the box office! Also Ash’s comeback film, Jazbaa, fared to do well, so there’s there…

Verdict: An average grosser at best!

Film: Ae Dil Hai Mushkil

This is a Karan Johar film. And Karan Johar has never gone wrong with his directorials. It has a great cast in Ash, Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Fawad Khan. Since it is a KJo film, it is definite to have some great music. Also, since it’s a KJo film, the marketing will be quite great. I hope you release where I am going with this…

Verdict: Superhit!

Katrina Kaif

Film: Fitoor

Abhishek Kapoor last two films as a directors had bowled us over, be it Rock on or Kai Po Che. Both were successes at the box office as well. However his latest film, Fitoor, an adaptation of Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations, has run into a lot of hassles during the production, major being Rekha walking out of the film, and hastily being replaced by Tabu. Also both the lead stars, Katrina Kaif and Aditya Roy Kapoor’s last films have tanked, so there is less buzz about them. So it’s quite an uphill task for the makers of the film.

Verdict: A difficult proposition, unless Abhishek Kapoor has an ace hidden in his sleeve…

Film: Jagga Jasoos

Another film of Kat’s that is getting delayed thanks to post-production woes. With actors getting chopped off completely (We are talking about you, Govinda), to numerous reshoots, to the news that the Anurag Basu film will have too many songs, we are not sure whether to be excited or scared! The only thing we are excited about this film that she is paired u with her real life boyfriend, Ranbir Kapoor. And also Ranbir and Anurag has given us the wonderful Barfi…

Verdict: Can either tank or turn out to be a surprise like Tamasha!
