Sonam Kapoor’s Neerja, Shah Rukh Khan’s Dear Zindagi, Salman Khan’s Sultan – which was the BEST movie of 2016?

2016 year was an exciting year for me as a movie buff. On one hand I get to watch a commercial potboiler like Sultan, where Salman Khan has no qualms showing off his paunch, while on the other hand, I don’t mind bursting into tears for a hard-hitting drama like Neerja, that had Sonam Kapoor in the lead with no Khan to support her. It was a year where women took the lead from the men and gave us quality stuff that a male-dominated industry like Bollywood needs. If Sonam Kapoor made her detractors eat their words about her lack of acting ability with Neerja, Alia Bhatt delivered two critically acclaimed performances in Udta Punjab and Dear Zindagi, making us believe that Highway was no flash in the pan. Kareena Kapoor proved once again that marriage is no deterrent to good roles with a movie like Ki & Ka.

As for the actors, there was Akshay Kumar who gave us three different entertainers that all belonged to various genres, and yet made hits out of them. Shah Rukh Khan may have had a misfire with FAN, but it was a laudable effort and he also redeemed himself with Dear Zindagi. Salman Khan proved again why he is the golden ruler of the box office, while the younger stars like Varun Dhawan, Sidharth Malhotra, Ranbir Kapoor also got their opportunities to shine. Everyone one had their movies (except for Deepika and Kangana), not everyone shined and we had a lot of movies that sank without a trace, while some made it to our fave list. Now here’s a chance for you to show us which of these below 2016 movies are your favorites. Please note that these films were considered based on two factors – their box office appeal, as well as how they fared well with the critics.

Based on these two factors, here is our list of Bollywood movies from 2016 that stood out from the rest…

Dangal

Dangal

Dangal

Aamir Khan does it again! He ends 2016 with a bang by delivering of the best movie of the decade. Dangal is a well-enacted biopic, that has some brilliant performances from all the cast members. Aamir gives his best performance in years, but its the girls playing his daughters who steal the show at times. The wrestling sequences are well-choreographed, and the narrative is very strong at most of the time. It’s not easy to make a movie that supports sports development, women empowerment and duty towards nation without sounding preachy, but Dangal manages to pull that off with immaculate ease.

Neerja

Neerja

Neerja

If I had to be partial, Neerja would be the movie for me that wins at nearly every department – be it direction, the narrative, the technical aspects and the performances. It’s not easy to make a movie that finds itself confined to a claustrophobic cabin for most of its runtime, with a lead actress who is not often praised for her acting prowess, and still make it brilliant. Neerja is not only the best biopic of the year, or perhaps the decade as well, it also gave Sonam Kapoor her best performance till date. If you leave the screening dry-eyed, you know there is something wrong with you.

Airlift

Airlift

Airlift

Based on a real-life incident set during the Gulf War, Airlift is that kind of Bollywood movie that sets us on the same scale as international-standard survival dramas. It may not be bereft of Bollywood clichés (that climax fight could have been avoided), yet this thriller has enough moments to make us bite our nails at the plight of our fellow countrymen trapped in a foreign land, torn by war. Akshay Kumar is on a roll here, and he has a fine supporting cast to lend gravitas to the movie.

Kapoor & Sons

Kapoor & Sons

Kapoor & Sons

Did you ever expect a Bollywood mainstream movie to accept homosexuality as a part of its plot? Without making it in your face, Kapoor & Sons did just that while making a movie about a dysfunctional family, that has problems like any of ours. Replete with brilliant performances from the entire cast, especially Fawad Khan, and a taut direction by Shakun Bates, Kapoor & Sons could be 2016’s best family drama of the year.

Pink

Pink

Pink

A movie that gave the word NO a lot of respect, Pink was a near-brilliant court room drama, heralded by strong performances. Taking on the still topical subject on female harassment, Pink doesn’t hesitate into being an uncomfortable viewing at times, thanks to stark depiction of molestation. Sure the conveniently happy ending has its share of detractors, but overall it’s a very strong movie with a fantastic message.

Dear Zindagi

Dear Zindagi

Dear Zindagi

I always say FAN was Shah Rukh Khan’s best performance in years, but the movie left me disappointed. That was somehow redeemed in his next, Dear Zindagi, a clean flick about how to face your problems head on with some philosophical (and sometimes preachy) gems. Shah Rukh Khan was fine in his extended cameo of a therapist, but it was Alia Bhatt who walked away with all the acting accolades. Sure the movie was a half an hour too long and self-indulgent, but many people could relate to its various themes and situations it presented, making it a decent hit.

Udta Punjab

Udta Punjab

Udta Punjab

Udta Punjab got me in its support the moment I saw that dark and hard-hitting trailer. While the movie found itself in unnecessary controversies surrounding its release, Abhishek Chaubey’s handling of drug abuse in Punjab told through the lives of four individuals is an exemplary tale in itself. Balancing on the fine line between hard-hitting drama and black comedy, the movie had some splendid performances from Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor and Diljit Dosanjh. Udta Punjab is not without its flaws, but it is nearly a masterpiece that 2016 can claim of its own.

Sultan

Sultan

Sultan

Salman never promises you good cinema, he promises good entertainers. While I am not a huge fan of Sultan, it does have its bright moments, some good songs and well-directed wrestling sequences. Above all, this could also be Salman Khan’s best performance in recent times; that self-introspective mirror scene did it for me. And those 300 crore business that the movie managed is enough to give Sultan a place in the list. After all, nearly an entire country cannot go wrong in liking a movie. Oh, wait! A country voted for Trump, didn’t it?

MS Dhoni: The Untold Story

MS Dhoni: The Untold Story

MS Dhoni: The Untold Story

People were disappointed that they never got to see the career controversies of Dhoni in his supposed biopic. The movie also had the feel that it was a vanity project for Captain Cool. But Neeraj Pandey’s fine handling of the project made it an inspiring drama about a small-town boy from Ranchi who became the MVP of Indian cricket, through his sheer hard work and determination. It also helped matters that Sushant Singh Rajput was brilliant in his role.

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil

Is ADHM’s Karan Johar’s skewered take on love and friendship? Or is it his most mature work till date? Never has a Bollywood movie got so much divisive reactions than this Diwali release. While not a fan myself, I do appreciate that there was sense of maturity in how Karan Johar handled Anushka – Ranbir’s track, though that weak climax nearly did it in. ADHM also boasts of a killer soundtrack, great technical values and Aishwarya Rai looking her hottest. In short, it was this year’s best looking movie.

So which of these is your fave movie? Let us know…

Salman Khan’s Sultan earns Rs 15 crore in Pakistan

sultan-bo-collections-759

Bollywood superstar Salman Khan and Anushka Sharma-starrer Sultan has earned Rs 150 million on the first five days of its release, setting a new record of doing the best business on Eid days.

According to the Geo Films, the distributors of Sultan in Pakistan, the Indian film directed by Ali Abbas Zafar, has eclipsed the opening weekend record set by Pakistani movie “Jawani Phir Nahi Ani (JPNA)” on Eidul Azha last year.

“One advantage ‘Sultan’ had over previous films including ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ was that it was released over a five-day weekend because of Eid holidays,” said Muhammad Nasir of Geo Films. “And with tickets for the first five days of screening already being sold in advance ‘Sultan’ has crossed Rs 150 million by today (Sunday),” he added.

Since the release of action film “Bodyguard” in 2011, Salman Khan has established a near invincible dominance over the Eidul Fitr weekends. Released on July 6, the first day of Eid, “Sultan” earned Rs 35 million and Rs 41 million on its first and second day, respectively.

While “Sultan” continues to enjoy a healthy run in Pakistani cinemas, other international and domestic releases have not fared so well at the local box office. Two of the major casualties of Sultan’s onslaught were Hollywood animated film, “Finding Dory” and the Pakistani heist-film “Sawaal 700 Crore Dollar Ka”.

With exhibitors showing a preference to screen “Sultan”, both of the other movies were released on a limited number of screens. Unlike “Sultan”, which was released on 75 screens, “Finding Dory” was shown in only 15 cinemas (25-30 screens) with its box office collections amounting to Rs 3 million after the first two days.

The other Hollywood films, which were released along with “Sultan” on Eid were “Ice Age: Collision Course”, “The Legend of Tarzan” and “The Secret Life of Pets”.

“During Eid, lower or middle class families enjoy gatherings and they rush to single screens and an action film starring Salman Khan is the perfect choice for a fun outdoor gathering,” Nasir said.

Salman Khan’s Sultan, Aamir Khan’s Dangal poster, Shah Rukh Khan’s next with Anushka Sharma – Meet the top 5 newsmakers of the week!

111

It was the week when Sultan had the grand release…So you know which star or movie has made the maximum number of headlines this week. Surprisingly even the other two Khans also got their share of attention with their respective upcoming films.

Here are the top 5 news makers of the week…

Cool tagline isn’t it? That’s what happened when Salman Khan‘s latest Eid release killed it with a roaring business at the theatres. The film was released on Wednesday, to capitalise on the Eid weekend, and it surely did. Sultan got the highest opening day collections this year, and also beatBajrangi Bhaijaan‘s opening day record as well, though fell short of those of Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’s. And it continues to soar ahead! The film also got generally good reviews, with most of them praising the performances of Salman and Anushka Sharma, as well as the romance angle between them!

Shah Rukh Khan reveals a lot during his Eid interaction

When SRK met the media yesterday for an Eid meet n greet, it was certainly more interesting than the meet n greet by a certain other Khan, who used his 10 minutes to just gush over Salman Khan and Sultan. While SRK did spoke about Salman, he also gave a lot more tidbits about his films and life as well. He confirmed that Anushka will be his heroine in the Imtiaz Ali’s film that will roll in August. He will also work with Aanand L Rai’s film in November. He also spoke about having a meeting with the Roshans’ over Kaabil clashing with Raees. He also denied hating Karan Johar’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil trailer, claiming he has not even watched it, forget not liking it.

Aamir Khan’s Dangal poster gets praised!

Aamir Khan released the first poster of Dangal that had him in a older getup with grey hairs (He plays real-life former wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat in the film), surrounded by four tomboyish girls who play his daughters in the films. The poster was praised for its simplicity, shorn of any gimmicks as well for promoting women empowerment. Aamir Khan was also praised for sticking to his age.

Hrithik Roshan to not postpone Kaabil

Earlier we had mentioned about how SRK said his Raees team is looking to have meetings with Rakesh Roshan and Hrithik to postpone Kaabil, which is clashing with Raees next January, to another date. SRK was looking a lot confident when he said this. However, Sanjay Gupta, director of Kaabil, had tweeted the next day saying the film has not got postponed. Well, SRK, how will you handle this now?

Great Grand Masti’s Censor copy gets leaked…and the film gets preponed

Whether you are excited about the release of the third part of Masti franchise or not is upto you, but what happened with the film is not really good. A couple of weeks before its release date, the film’s Censor Copy got leaked. Unlike what happened with Udta Punjab, where the Censor Copy was leaked just a couple of days before, here there are no chances of recovery as the gap is too huge. The makers have preponed the film to make it release on July 15. However the onslaught of Sultan, the lack of interest in sex comedies and obviously, the leak don’t show a very bright future for the film!

7 records that Salman Khan’s Sultan BROKE on Day 1

maxresdefault-1

The film has had a massive opening at the domestic box office and we have all the info…

Salman Khan‘s Sultan was one of the most anticipated films of the year and it opened to housefull shows across India yesterday. While many people couldn’t see the film coz Eid changed at the last minute, the occupancy of the film was the highest ever as it fluctuated between 80 to 90 per cent throughout the day. And as Eid is celebrated today, lakhs of people who couldn’t watch the film yesterday, will watch surely watch it today.

We always knew that the film would open well and break many records . However, we never expected it go on such a record breaking spree. Yes, the film has already broken 7 records and we are sure once the official figures come out, it will be even more. But till then here are the 7 records that Salman Khan’s Sultan has managed to break:

Salman Khan‘s film has now become the biggest Eid opener. According to early estimates, the film has collected about Rs 38-40 crore which is way more than the first day collection of his last release on Eid – Bajrangi Bhaijaan (Rs 27.25 crore). It also surpassed the record of Chennai Express, which had collected Rs 33.10 crore on day one.

Biggest opener of 2016

The film is now also the biggest opener of 2016 as it collects around Rs 38-40 crore on day one. In fact, it is double of what Shah Rukh Khan’s Fan that collected Rs 19.20 crore.

Highest collection in advance bookings

The film had broken a record even before it released. Sultan had started its advance booking three days before its release. And as the film released, we came to know that it had collected more than Rs 18 crore (approx Rs 20 crore) which is more than what the advance booking collection of Kick or Bajrangi Bhaijaan, which held the highest collections till now.

Highest opening day collection for a sports based films

Sultan’s Rs 40 crore collection on day one will also be the highest opening day collection for a sports based film. It has easily surpassed the likes of Chak De! India, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (Rs 9 crore approx) and Mary Kom (Rs 8.4 crore)

Highest collection on a Wednesday

Salman Khan has two films now – Ek Tha Tiger and Sultan that have released on Wednesday. We haven’t seen many films releasing mid week but both these films were big ones due to Eid. WhileEk Tha Tiger had managed to open very well at the box office, collecting Rs 32.92 crore on day one, Sultan has managed to easily cross it as it collected Rs 38-40 crore yesterday.

Highest occupancy of 2016

As we mentioned the film opened to an occupancy of 80-90 per cent, which sustained throughout the day. This is now the highest occupancy of 2016, after it beat Shah Rukh Khan’s Fan occupancy (75-80 per cent) and Akshay Kumar’s Airlift occupancy (above 50-60 per cent).

Best reviewed film for Salman Khan

Sultan is the best reviewed film for Salman Khan ever. While Kick, Ek Tha Tiger, Bajrangi Bhaijaanand Prem Ratan Dhan Payo did get good reviews, Sultan has been one of those films that has been praised by the critics and the audience. Movie goers can’t stop praising Salman and the film.

What do you think about these records that Salman Khan’s Sultan has already broken?

Salman Khan Sultan Box Office Day 2 collections could push it towards new records

sultan-poster-teaser-release-2016

If Sultan’s opening day box office collection was called gigantic, the Salman Khan film’s second day BO performance is even better. With Eid being celebrated on Thursday, a day after the release, Sultan is expected to have added anything between Rs 38-40 crore to its day 1 business of Rs 36.54 crore.

Sultan on day 2 saw packed houses all across. Trade analysts are predicting that Salman’s Sultan may either reach or be very close to the magic Rs 100-crore mark within three days of release.

Trade analyst Amul Mohan said that 80-90% occupancy was reported in most theatres. The film released in 4500 screens in India.

Sultan and its huge opening this Eid is nothing surprising. Every time Salman Khan has released his film on the festive ocassion of Eid, records have fallen like a house of cards, producers have earned money and paying audience has gone home happy.

With Sultan he has another ace up his sleeve — a film which is unlike a typical Salman film, a tight script, rousing drama and excellent performances all around, especially from Anushka Sharma.

So, will Salman go one-up on his past Eid record, which happens to be impeccable? If it was Bajrangi Bhaijaan in 2015, the year before that was Kick. Both the films made multiple crores and earned their place in Bollywood’s blockbuster gallery. It is for nothing that Eid weekend is so coveted that Bollywood’s two Khans — Salman and Shah Rukh — were vying for it in 2016. Salman and his producers Yash Raj Films prevailed and Shah Rukh shifted the release of his next, Raees.

Given the over Rs 36.54 crore debut of Sultan, will Shah Rukh be ruing his decision? Well, he simply should have looked at BO successes in the last five years. Ever since 2010, Salman has prevailed at the BO this time of the year with a string of superhits — Dabbang, Bodyguard, Ek Tha Tiger, Kick and Bajrangi Bhaijaan. The only year Shah Rukh managed to rain on Bhai’s parade was in 2013 with Chennai Express.

So whose records is Salman Khan breaking with Sultan? His own. For a mid-week release, Sultan’s collections at Rs 36.54 crore are stupendous. The fact that this is the money the film made on a day which was not even Eid (the festival was shifted to July 7) is even more exemplary. Prior to this, the star’s Ek Tha Tiger held the record for mid-week release with over Rs 32 crore in ticket sales.

In terms of biggest first-day openings, Shah Rukh Khan’s Chennai Express with Rs 44.9 crore is the biggest. It is followed by Salman’s Prem Ratan Dhan Paayo with Rs 40 crore. Trade is said the film made Rs 36.54 crore on day one and the number only went up on day 2. Expect records to tumble.

And now for the big one — trade is counting on Sultan to earn over Rs 150 crore in the first weekend, will that happen? Here’s all that is in the movie’s favour — a five-day weekend, the second day of its release being the Eid holiday, a bumper opening and solid word of mouth. For once, even critics are given Salman star ratings for Sultan. Till now, the biggest weekend grosser is PRDP that managed Rs 129.7 crore business despite being slammed by critics.

If the film can manage to destroy that record, Salman will indeed be the Sultan of Bollywood. King Khan and ilk, time to worry about your crowns?

WOW! Salman Khan Opens Up About The Sultan Poster Being Photoshopped

sultan-new-poster-Salman-Khan

Salman Khan‘s Sultan has, unsurprisingly, opened to big numbers. But before the release of the film, the makers were accused of overtly photoshopping Salman in the poster. In an interview to DNA, Salman actually spoke about it.

CfwvWWAUYAEubmG

He said:

“I think it was photoshopped. The head wasn’t looking correct. Maybe, it wasn’t Photoshop but there was something very weird about the head. Photoshop would be a wrong word. The proportion was slightly wrong. My head looks bigger in that picture because of the angle in which the picture was taken.”

He further added that he was really ripped during the shoot of the film. So they had to enhance some fat on his body during the fight scenes because wrestlers aren’t built like that.

That’s cool!

Here’s Who Aditya Chopra Reportedly Wanted To Cast Opposite Salman Khan In Sultan

Untitled-1

Sultan’s director Ali Abbas Zafar gave an interview to DNA where he spoke primarily aboutAnushka Sharma and how amazing she is in the film. The female lead of Sultan was not revealed for the longest time and while many names popped up, Anushka was the most unexpected of them all. Ali revealed that they auditioned a lot of fresh faces for this film, but eventually it was decided that one of the current actresses would be better suited for the role. There were strong rumours that producer Aditya Chopra was very keen to cast Parineeti Chopra in the film, and Ali agreed that she was a strong contender.

parif10

Here’s why they went with Anushka though –

“All I will say is, when we were boiling down to things, there was a talk of Parineeti, because she had a body type. But I wanted Anushka because I just felt that. At the end of the day, as a director you can only go by your gut and instinct. And I went with that.”

What do you think?
