Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan have won fans with their last few outings on the silver screen. This is in fact becoming one of the most loved on screen couples of Bollywood. The last two times Alia-Varun came together they delivered a hit. No wonder the young stars have fan clubs named “Varia”and “Valia”. Now you’d want to know how this duo has fared in their latest Dharma Productions venture Badrinath Ki Dulhania directed by Shashank Khaitan. Do the Humpty Sharma trio recreate the magic this time around? Well read our Badrinath Ki Dulhania movie review to find out…
#What’s it about
The film revolves around the lives of a rich yet not spoilt brat, Badrinath Bhansal aka Badri (Varun Dhawan) from Jhansi and an ambitious young girl Vaidehi Trivedi (Alia Bhatt) from Kota. While Badri’s only motive in life is to get hitched to Vaidehi with whom he fell in love while dancing at a wedding, Vaidehi has bigger ambitions in life and battles to fight. The duo has different plans in life, except that Badri will not take a no for an answer and wants to desperately win over Vaidehi. He’s unable to understand how this young girl can resist such a perfect guy, whose only credential is that he belongs to a rich family. Badri is a tenth grade pass who hasn’t even attended college and has no regrets admitting that he works for his dad as a loan money recovery guy. Vaidehi on the other hand is literally aiming for the skies. The rest of the story you will get a sneak peek at just looking at the theatricals.
VARUN DHAWAN! Yes, Varun as Badri will remind you of the best of both Salman Khan and Govinda. He has the star power of Salman, a great body like the Dabangg hero and looks super hot in this film. His comic timing and emotional scenes will really make you believe that he’s indeed the true successor of Govinda. Varun lends himself so well to the comedy-drama genre. Varun steals the show from every other character in the film and trust me there are quite a few who stand out. There are a few scenes in particular where he’s super entertaining and endearing. Like for example, when he tries to woo Alia and realises that he’s indeed not a match for her and breaks down before his friend Somdev (Sahil Vaid) or then the scene where he sees his lady love go far away from him and achieve success he’s both proud and emotional. He’s hero who isn’t the macho who will just beat up the baddies and take a punch for his ladylove. He is the lover who doesn’t mind sharing responsibilities and taking on the kitchen and laundry duties, while celebrating his girlfriend’s success.
Alia Bhatt plays her part well, she is convincing as Vaidehi a go-getter who doesn’t mind breaking rules of the society. She will speak her mind and is feisty and super ambitious as she is soft hearted and guilty of hurting Badri. Badri’s friend Somdev is one of the best characters in the movie and so are his brother Alok Bhansal (Yash Sinha) and sister-in-law Urmila Shukla (Shweta Basu Prasad).
The film has a good blend of comedy and drama. Despite a comic touch to his role, Varun manages to make you feel for his character. This is a movie where Dhawan Jr is the most endearing. And yes, the Tamma Tamma song is placed at the perfect point, just before the filmmaker is about to lose out interest that is.
The second half falters and the efforts to incorporate Singapore tourism is too on your face. While we see Badri and Vaidehi’s relationship build, the build-up itself is a little boring. One particular scene that is supposed to deal with a grave issue of sexual attack on Badri is made into a not so tasteful joke. Again the film is too predictable and in fact right before the interval the twist too becomes a little too predictable. The movie could have been edited better. The climax is almost like the makers were in a hurry to sum up their film. It’s shoddy and a very strong message gets lost.
#What to do
Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan prove that their pair means a bona fide success. Shashank Khaitan gives you a movie that you can relax with family and friends on an extended Holi weekend. Go watch it especially for Varun Dhawan!
